After Correspondence I turned my attention to a different reading of physicality. The themes of Water are commonplace – divorce, motherhood, isolation, and reconciliation – and it’s very different from my other books. Not only is it much more personally intense, but it also has an eerie background. It gave me bad dreams whilst I was writing it and proved to be unnervingly prescient about a relationship which would absorb me several years after its publication. I still find it a pretty uncomfortable read.
